Hot-rolled steel plate: production, surface and grade selection

Selecting hot-rolled steel by surface condition, delivery condition and intended use.

Understand the Material

Black steel sheet is a commercial term for hot-rolled flat steel that may retain mill scale on its surface. Coil and plate describe delivery formats, not steel grades. Erdemir’s hot-rolled product range includes grades for structural applications, forming, tubes and pressure vessels.

Two sheets of the same thickness can behave differently during welding, bending and impact testing, depending on grade and delivery condition. A commercial product name alone is not sufficient when selecting material for pressure vessels or load-bearing structures.
