S235JR: yield strength, tensile strength and impact properties
Understanding the grade designation, thickness effects and mechanical values for S235JR.
Sources checked:Understand the Material
S235JR is a structural steel grade covered by EN 10025-2. The values below refer to the stated thickness ranges in ArcelorMittal’s A30 hot-rolled steel table. Minimum yield strength may decrease as thickness increases.
JR identifies an impact subgrade; it is not interchangeable with J0 or J2. Use the current grade, standard and delivery condition rather than the historical commercial designation St37. Welding procedures and suitability for the design must be verified for the project.
Technical Properties
| Property | Source value / condition |
|---|---|
| Yield Re, 1.5–16 mm | Minimum 235 MPa |
| Yield Re, >16–20 mm | Minimum 225 MPa |
| Tensile Rm, 1.5–20 mm | 360–510 MPa |
| JR impact, longitudinal / 6–20 mm | Minimum 27 J at +20 °C |
| Standard | EN 10025-2 |
Applications & Selection Notes
General steel structures and welded fabrication; engineering assessment is required for loading, temperature and impact conditions.
