Hardox® 400: hardness and fabrication properties
Hardness ranges for Hardox 400 sheet and plate, and typical versus guaranteed yield strength.
Sources checked:Understand the Material
Hardox 400 is wear-resistant steel produced by SSAB. The number 400 describes nominal hardness; it does not define every mechanical property.
The manufacturer’s yield-strength value of 1,100 MPa is typical, not a guaranteed minimum. For products below 2.5 mm, hardness is not tested or guaranteed; the table uses a value converted from tensile strength. Select welding preheat and bend radius using the manufacturer’s fabrication recommendations.
Technical Properties
| Product / thickness | Hardness (HBW) |
|---|---|
| Sheet, 2–8 mm | 370–430; exception below 2.5 mm explained above |
| Plate, 4–130 mm | 370–430 |
| Typical yield strength | 1,100 MPa; not guaranteed |
Applications & Selection Notes
Wear-exposed equipment and liners. Select the grade considering the wear mechanism, impact and fabrication conditions.
